Operation is all automatic. The light turns on at sunset and will run to dawn or for the required pre-set time. Six hours, ten hours, all night, and split times, whatever the design time is. Variations such as timed push button operation are also available.
Each system that Pecan builds is designed to suit the location of its installation. Solar irradiation design data is used based upon the time of year when the proposed installation site receives the least amount of sun.
This design criteria will make sure that the light will operate throughout the year for the selected time. Fully sealed maintenance free batteries are used and sized to provide over 5 days no sun storage with an operating life of up to 8 years.
All Pecan systems are designed and constructed to the relevant Australian Standards, from materials that will withstand the harshest of environments.
The pole and battery box are hot dipped galvanised and can be powder coated in your choice of standard colours if required. The range of colours available may be viewed here.
All fixing hardware is either anodised aluminium or stainless steel.

The new range of Solar Area Lights is the culmination of 10 years’ research and development and provides an exciting alternative to conventional mains powered lights, for many public lighting applications.
The patented tilting system: This allows maintenance servicing under the new OH&S working at height regulations simple and much cheaper and quicker than other brands as a cherry picker or scissor lift is not required.
New system features include:
- Exclusive Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) regulator with 12 month data logging & split time capability.
- Dedicated power converter allows use of off the shelf luminaires & lamps, and ensures maximum possible lamp life.
- Easier access to system controls and test points.
- Upgrade to patented tilt system to allow 3 panel head frames where required.
- Increased anti-theft and vandal measures.

Our fully integrated, stand alone solar lights are now available in several pole designs.
The Pecan Area Light combines increased public safety in an affordable lighting package. These simple, practical solar lights are suitable for bikeways, picnic areas, jetties and parking bays and like all Pecan lights, has been designed to incorporate easier access for system maintenance.
SYSTEM OPERATION
Solar panels absorb light and convert it to energy, even on overcast days (now app 25% – 30% extra with MPPT), converting it to electricity. This electricity is stored in a battery. A small electronic MPPT regulator controls the functions of the system: it acts as a photocell, turning the light on at dusk. It is also a timer, regulating the hours the light stays on; it regulates the battery charge preventing overcharging and protects against discharging through the panel at night. The system will operate for 5 consecutive days without sun.
PAYBACK ANALYSIS
How long will it take to recoup the investment in Solar Powered lights? In many cases payback occurs on the very first day of installation. Here are some points that should be considered when comparing Solar Lights with Mains Powered Lights.

Vandal Protection
The optional vandal kit consists of a wire guard for lamp protection, and polycarbonate sheet protection to solar panel faces.
The stylish Pecan headframe encloses the back of panel for complete vandal protection in the form of a powdercoated metal backing.
The full wire guard vandal kit is available for some luminaire types only, panel only protection is available for all other models.
